Who is behind Hunt of Hounds?
Hunt of Hounds is a vision of mine – Sabrina Johnson. Together with my husband, I manage the designs, production, marketing, and sales of all our products.
What made you want to create the label?
I am formally trained in design, and have worked as an illustrator, designer, and animator. In 2010, after working for different fashion labels here in Bali, I decided to focus on my own designs and created a brand for myself. In 2015, we changed our name from Minnon Made to Hunt of Hounds.
What was the idea behind the name Hunt of Hounds?
This name captures the romance and adventure of past eras.
Why focus on metal and precious stones as your working materials?
By using precious metals and gemstones, our pieces have value beyond the trend of the season and are therefore timeless. We want our jewelry to be a part of our client’s lives for as long as possible. We sometimes use the term future-heirloom to mean that Hunt Of Hounds can be cherished for generations.
What makes your products stand out from other jewelry brands and clothing labels with accessories collection?
Our designs are personal to us, and therefore reflect quite deeply our inspirations and interests. Each Hunt Of Hounds piece starts from our own sketch and is created by hand in our own workshop. This in-house process gives our jewelry a level of detail and finishing that you can’t achieve by mass producing or ordering from China.
Where do you source your materials?
We source many of our gemstones from Indonesia, however we find lots of great jewels from places like India, South America, and Canada. Some of our limited edition pieces are a result of finding a really unique cut, color, or size of a gem.
The process of jewelry-making is a personal one for Sabrina Johnson; from sketching to creation by hand, each piece is given equal attention and thought.
Where do you find inspiration to keep your product range fresh and unique?
We are in-spired by history, mythology, botany, architecture, and of course, fashion. We like to combine classical motifs with current trends.
What advice would you give to a young/ be-ginning jeweler?
Trust your instincts. Tell your story through your work. Keep working through the rough patches. It feels amazing to come out the other side with something you can be proud of. Surround yourself with good people who can inspire, motivate, and champion your work.
What does jewelry mean to you?
Jewelry is about feeling. It is a way to express your mood, your person-ality, and your relationships.
